The American Dental Association is a professional association established in 1859 and has more than 152,000 members. Based in Chicago, the ADA is the world's largest and oldest national dental association and promotes good oral health to the public while representing the dental profession.
AAO
The American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO, is an advocate group for 15,500 orthodontists. These professionals are also dentists and members of the American Dental Association as well. Orthodontists are specialists in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of orthodontic problems. After dental school, orthodontists are required to successfully complete a minimum of two academic years of study in an accredited orthodontic residency program. Only those who have completed this training may call themselves "orthodontists," and only orthodontists may be members of the American Association of Orthodontists.
