I can easily say that throughout orthodontic treatment and following orthodontics, flossing is one of the most important cleaning activities that can be done. Flossing will help prevent cavities, help prevent tooth scarring (or decalcification), help prevent gingivitis and possible bone loss and bad breath.
Flossing with braces takes a little more dedication, but with the right tools, it fits very easily into a good oral hygiene routine. To help with flossing with braces, the use of a floss threader is highly recommended. A floss threader is a soft plastic needle that helps you floss between braces and around your teeth in those difficult areas. Just attach your favorite dental floss to the “eye” of the floss threader with a knot and guide the plastic needle underneath the brace wire until the floss comes fully through. You can then floss normally down into the gum tissue and around the sides of the teeth. Most floss threader brands are available at your local grocery or drug stores and come in multiple-unit sanitary dispensers. Remember, flossing should be done daily and is an essential part of a good oral hygiene routine.
